It is okay to want to remove paint from your structure, replace it with a new one, or apply a different type of finish. However, most homeowners tend to think that the only sure way of stripping paint from the wood’s surface is by using chemicals; this is not entirely true. There are several ways that you can apply and successfully steer your surface clear of paint. As a wooden structure owner, you need to know an easy natural paint removal from wood method.
You can use several ways to remove paint from the surface of your structure without necessarily using chemicals. Such methods include sanding, heating with the heat gun. Additionally, you can use a pressure washer for the removal of the paint.
The chemicals used in the removal of paint from the wood sometimes contain fumes that can cause health complications, so I’ll always advise that you try much as you can to adopt the chemical free ways of paint stripping.

How to Remove Paint From Wood Without Chemicals
As I have stated before, there are several ways in which you can use to remove paints from wood, and they necessarily do not involve the use of chemicals. Such ways include:
Sanding
With the right materials, you will find sanding a great and easy way of paint removal. Here are some of the steps involved in paint removal by sanding:
- You need a belt sander and 80-grit sandpaper; a belt sander is excellent, especially if you are working on a large surface such as a deck. Ensure that your extension cord is long enough so that you have an easy time reaching every part of your surface.
- Put your belt steadily over the wood’s surface that you look to strip and hold it using both of your hands. Pull the trigger to start the sander, maintain the firm grip, and sand your surface as you see fit.
- Ensure that you are sanding with the grain. You mustn’t sand one section of your wood for an extended duration because it can cause gouging on the wood’s face.
- If you notice some paint removing on your surface, use an edge sander, sanding sponge, or sanding block to remove them. As soon as you have sanded all the surfaces, you can use finer, 120-grit sandpaper to do a second sanding so that your surface is smooth.
- Use a shop vac for dust collection to remove all the sand dust from your working surface to keep it clean.
Heat Gun
Using a heat gun presents another way of removing paint from your surface without necessarily using chemicals. The steps involved are:
- Put on your heavy leather gloves and ready your metal scraper with a wood handle to use at the right time. Follow that by connecting your heat gun to a power outlet.
- Switch on your heat gun to a medium setting for the start. Hold the end of the gun about 8 to 10 inches from your painted surface. Allow the hot air to blow over a section of the surface for about 10 to 15 seconds. As soon as you see the paint starting to bubble, move the heat to the next area, and use the metal scraper to remove the melted paint away from the surface.
- So that you get the best results possible, you need to work on small areas, heat and scrap before you can move to the next. Much as you heat, you should stay keen to identify when the wood is darkening; too much heat can burn the wood, so remain extra careful by adjusting the heat levels as needed. Remove rough patches of paint using steel wool.
- Once you have removed all the paints, use sandpaper to smoothen your surface.
Homemade Paint Stripper With Baking Soda
Let’s say you purchase an old house that requires refinishing. You are looking for a paint stripper that does not involve chemicals; then, you can achieve that using your readily available kitchen baking soda.
Baking soda would work, but it won’t remove paint from the wood on its own. Therefore, you need to boil water and add some baking soda. Then, “cook” your structure for about 20 minutes. Your structure will expand differently from the paint; therefore, the two will separate effortlessly.
This method is, in fact, faster than the use of a heat gun or blow dryer.
Homemade Paint Stripper Using Vinegar
Vinegar is a common kitchen item; it’s versatile and does more than just cleaning and deodorizing. So the question is, does vinegar remove paint from wood? Yes, vinegar helps with the softening of paint.
It is not entirely accurate to say that vinegar can remove the paint. Even so, it softens the paint making it easy to scrape it off your surfaces without a lot of work like in the case of using wood sanders.
All you should do is to boil the vinegar and apply it over the surface that you are looking to strip using a paintbrush. Allow it to settle over the surface for some time and test to see if the paint will start peeling.
If that does not happen upon the first application, repeat it until the paint softens.
Removing Paint from Wood Using Pressure Washer
Suppose you are working on a large stripping project such as your wooden deck or a floor, you might want to do with a pressure washer to save on time. If you are working on an external project, you need to ensure that the water that splashes at high pressure does not get into your home. You can do that by closing all the openings such as windows.
For the best result possible, ensure that you set your pressure to at least 2500 PSI as this will help get the job done effortlessly. A pressure of up to 3000 PSI would work as well; however, you must not use such a pressure on hardboard siding as it’s more susceptible to damage by moisture.
While using a pressure washer for paint removal ensures that you move it with the grain of the wood when spraying the surface. You can get this pressure washer here:
Wire Brushes for Paint Removal
A wire brush does a great job, especially if you are looking to remove paints from areas that are not easy to reach, such as cracks on different parts of your structures. One thing you might not like about this method is that it is labor-intensive and does require a lot of elbow grease even if you choose to use a cordless drill type of attachment. Even so, it remains one of the best ways to remove paint from the surfaces of your structures. Why is that? Well, it’s because it gives you so much precision, unlike most of the methods that I’ve mentioned before.
I don’t advise that you go for this method, especially if you are working on large projects.
Infrared Devices
Infrared devices also use heat for paint stripping; they stand as one of the best paint removal methods as they do not leave dust behind; hence, you will not need a shop vac afterward. These devices heat the layers of paint without necessarily posing a risk of burning the wood.
One thing that you won’t like about infrared devices is that they are not very effective, especially in tight spaces. Using these devices for paint stripping would help if you can take precautions and protect other structures such as windows and glass metals from the infrared.
If you are considering this method for paint removal, then buy one of the Speedheater IR-Systems.
These devices do not come cheap; however, they do an excellent job of paint removal.
Steam Strippers
This method is no longer used actively unlike in the past, and this is after it came to the realization that subjecting the wood to hot steam was potentially causing warping, which in the long run caused damages to the surface. Much as it is useful, I do not recommend it; if you have other options, go for it instead of this one.
Use of Paint Scrapers for Paint Removal
If you are into painting, would like to remove paint from your surface, or do a lot of DIY painting projects, then you must have a Painter’s Tool Scraper. This multi-tool allows you to reach hard to access points regardless of the angle.
Alternatively, you can choose to go with a basic plastic or metal paint stripper.
The best practice of paint removal includes using a natural paint stripper, a heat gun, vinegar and then scraping away the paint.
Other Environmental Paint Removal Methods
Like I stated at the beginning of this post, there are several methods that you can use to remove paint from your structure that does not pose any threat to the environment through chemicals. Other than the ways that I’ve already discussed, here are more of such methods that you can use to strip paint from your surfaces.
Use of Soy Gel Paint Removers
This product does not contain any toxins; hence, it takes a little longer to lift paint than a paint stripper. One thing about it though, is that it does not evaporate, and therefore you can leave it on your surface for a very long time so that it can completely penetrate your paint for it to work effectively.
I’ve used this method for paint removal, and I have to admit that it is very effective; it does a great job compared to using a metal paint stripper.
Use of Citrus Based Paint Removers
It is one of the methods that many people overlook, but it is effective and poses no threat to the user or the environment. All you need to do is to apply it to your surface and allow it some time to settle and penetrate the paint.
As soon as you are confident that it has penetrated the surface properly, you can use a paint scraper to remove the paint from your surface. Allow it to dry and use steel wool to scrub away the tough paints.
Additionally, you can sand the surface afterward to gain a smoother surface.
Importance of Using Paint Strippers With No Chemicals
- Safer for Users and the Environment
Most of the paint stripping methods used by most people contain chemicals; these chemicals are risky as they may cause health complications such as respiratory complications or burns. Additionally, they are not very good for the environment.
The paint strippers with no chemicals remain the only safer options because they do the work effectively without causing any issues. They do not release any Volatile Organic Compounds to the atmosphere, and above all, some are everyday kitchen products that can perform multiple functionalities.
- They are Readily Available
These natural paint strippers include some of the standard household products such as vinegar and baking soda. Vinegar is readily available in supermarkets and serves many purposes, including paint stripping. Most chemical strippers are not available from the local stores and might involve ordering online to land one; this can be time-consuming.
- They are Cheap
Take a baking soda, for example; you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get your hands on baking soda. Some cost less than a dollar and can do a job over an extensive area. So if you are working with a budget, you want to consider using baking soda in paint removal.
- They are Faster and Effective
Some of these natural paint stripping methods are faster and can cover a large area within no time, take a pressure washer as an example. If you can set your equipment on the right pressure, you will accomplish your job in no time and a perfectly done finish. Other methods, such as sanding, might not be as fast. However, pressure washing remains one of the most effective and time-saving ways of stripping.
Will Nail Polish Remover Remove Paint from Wood?
Yes, but only if the finish isn’t lacquer. Most polish removers come as a combination of lacquer thinner and acetone, and therefore you can use it to remove paint.
Does Acetone Remove Paint From Wood?
Acetone is one of the most powerful colorless solvents that you can find in the market today. It does a great job when it comes to the removal of paint from different surfaces such as decks, floors, picnic tables, and other forms of furniture.
